Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances in the environment (air, soil, or water supply), food sources, personal care products, and manufactured products that interfere with the normal functioning of our body’s endocrine system.
EDCs interfere with the way the body’s hormones work by tricking our body into thinking that they are hormones or by blocking natural hormones from doing their job. They may even interfere with the production of hormones or change how sensitive our bodies are to different hormones.
These classes of chemicals are associated with weight gain, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, fertility (both in men and women), nerve problems, skin problems, immune function, respiratory problems, some cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological and learning problems.
The worst problem is that they are present almost everywhere - insecticides and pesticides, toys, plastics, synthetic cloth fabrics, cosmetics, packaged food products, fragrances, anti-bacterial soaps and many more.
